Andy Warhol: Polaroids 1958 – 1987
Andy Warhol was a tireless observer of life and its interactions. Always accompanied by a Polaroid camera, from the late 1950s until his death in 1987, he created a vast collection of snapshots capturing friends, lovers, patrons, celebrities, and strangers, as well as landscapes, fashion items, and self-portraits. This book, produced in collaboration with the Andy Warhol Foundation, presents more than 150 of these instant images.
Among the included portraits are famous figures such as Mick Jagger, Alfred Hitchcock, Jack Nicholson, Yves Saint Laurent, Pelé, and Debbie Harry, alongside scenes from Warhol’s personal surroundings, his life of luxury, and his landscapes, as well as still lifes of Cabbage Patch dolls and his iconic Campbell’s soup cans. These polaroids, often simple and improvised, document Warhol’s era much like Instagram records ours today. An unparalleled testimony of the life, world, and vision of the master of pop art and modernity.
In 1981, the BBC interviewed Andy Warhol, exploring his vision of photography, his methods, and the choice of subjects that marked his work. From Salvador Dalí to Muhammad Ali, through Blondie and Basquiat, Warhol captured friends, lovers, and objects with his characteristic pop gaze. This video offers a unique window into his creative process, complementing the definitive collection of his polaroids gathered in Andy Warhol. Polaroids 1958-1987.
