LA HABITACIÓN DE AL LADO
The book that accompanies Pedro Almodóvar’s new film, the first in his career shot entirely in English, starring Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore. Based on the novel Cuál es tu tormento by Sigrid Nunez, the film was awarded the Golden Lion at the 2024 Venice Festival and has received multiple nominations at the Goya Awards, the European Film Awards, and the Golden Globes, among other prestigious events.
Ingrid and Martha were very close friends in their youth. They worked at the same magazine, but Ingrid ended up becoming an autofiction novelist and Martha a war correspondent. Life’s circumstances separated them, and after many years without contact, they meet again in New York, in a critical yet strangely tender situation. Martha, who has been a very imperfect mother and has grown distant from her daughter, suffers from a serious illness. Ingrid will accompany her for several months, while they talk about death, friendship, and sexual pleasure as good allies to fight against the horror and cruelty of a world bent on moving toward destruction.
This edition contains, in addition to the film’s script in Spanish, an epilogue signed by Almodóvar himself that includes, in an unpublished text, his reflections on mourning; it is also illustrated in full color with stills from the film, images from the shooting, and storyboard fragments. La habitación de al lado is a book that serves as a perfect companion to the feature film.
