Melodrama
Released on October 9, 2017, Melodrama is Lorde's second album, a record that marked a turning point in her career and established her as one of the most influential voices of her generation. With this work, the New Zealand artist explores the emotional highs and lows of youth, celebration, and solitude, in a sound journey full of pop, electronic, and lyrical nuances.
Lorde gave hints of what was to come with the release of her first single, “Green Light”, in March, followed by “Liability”, “Sober”, and the powerful “Perfect Places”. The impact was immediate: with just “Green Light” she became a worldwide Trending Topic on Facebook and Twitter, gathering more than 2 billion impressions on Twitter in the first 24 hours.
In 2020, Melodrama was recognized by Rolling Stone as one of the greatest records in history, entering their list of the 500 greatest albums of all time at number 460.
The critics were quick to praise the album:
- Rolling Stone described “Green Light” as “a reflection of her coming of age.”
- The Fader declared it “a true pop anthem, perfect both for strolling and for the dance floor.”
- Pitchfork named “Green Light” and “Perfect Places” as best new songs.
- Billboard called “Liability” “astonishing.”
- Spin spoke of “Sober” as “the strangest but coolest song on Melodrama so far” and Pitchfork described it as “intoxicating.”
