A country is not its nobles, its kings, or its rich. A country is its people and ordinary folks. It is time to reclaim our history, the homeland they tried to steal from us.
For too many years, Spaniards have lived feeling like foreigners in our own home, in a cruel internal exile and without the feeling of having a country beneath our feet. Lately, talking about Spain, homeland, or nation is associated with conservative, right-wing, and backward ideas, but it wasn’t always like that. There was a time when shouting “¡Viva España!” helped overthrow kings, expel imperial armies, draft one of the first liberal constitutions in history, and advance democratic rights. It’s time to recover that decent and popular patriotism. Because true patriotism is not about waving flags or practicing hatred toward those who are different.
